How the Train-and-Bus Day Trip Works
Guimarães is a great day trip because the historic core is compact and walkable once you arrive. The easiest pattern is: train from Porto to Guimarães, then a short bus ride (or a walk) to reach the best viewpoint area.
Porto departure: São Bento or Campanhã
From Porto, you’ll typically start at one of two main stations:
- Porto-São Bento: central and very convenient if you’re already in the city centre.
- Porto Campanhã: often the better bet if your ideal train connection is easier from the larger station.
Because train connections can vary by day, treat this as “choose your most convenient departure” rather than forcing a specific station. If you’re travelling on a weekend or during a holiday period, check whether your preferred service runs directly or with a change.
Why Guimarães first, Penha later
The historic centre is best in daylight for the castle views and the stone streets around the main square. Later in the day, a bus up to the Convento da Penha area gives you the panorama without needing a long climb from town.
A simple rule: do the UNESCO core early, then use the bus to lift you into the viewpoints when crowds and heat are at their peak.
